沅江又称沅水，是湖南省第二大河流，发源于贵州省东南部，

有南北二源，南源马尾河，又称龙头江，源出贵州省都匀县云雾山鸡冠岭；北源重安江，又称诸梁江，源出贵州麻江县平越间大山。沅江以南源为主干，两源在三汊河口交汇后称清水江，先后流经台江、剑河、锦屏、天柱等县，再东流经黔阳县托口镇与渠水汇合，始称沅水，全长1033 公里。沅江在湖南境内流长568公里，其中怀化地区流长446公里，经托口、黔城（沅河乡、江市镇）、洪江、安江（秀洲乡、沙湾乡、岔头乡）、怀化（铜湾乡）、溆浦、辰溪、泸溪、沅陵，出怀化后经桃源、常德注入洞庭湖。
    沅江石种丰富，主要产自黔城、洪江、安江至铜湾一带，其中托口、沅河、江市镇流域主要以河卵石，象形石为主，其中秀洲、沙湾、岔头等乡资源最为丰富，以彩硅玉石、梅花石、金纹石、蜡石、水波纹、龙纹石、金刚石等为主。另外，铜湾、辰溪主要以金纹、芦苇纹、水波纹、麦穗纹等画面石为主。沅陵以象形石、画面石、蜡石为主，也有罕见的水冲菊花石、山料菊花石。
    沅江奇石是大自然造就的天然工艺品，石源丰富，石种繁多，特色各异，精彩纷呈，大多数硬度摩氏可达7--8度，颇具收藏价值。
    金纹石（也称墨石）产地于沙湾老屋背至怀化铜湾一带，其普遍为黑色，主要特点是在石头上金色或银色纹理交错，组成图案或文字，对比度强，水洗度好，条纹流畅清晰，图案惟妙惟肖，多为国画风格，生动逼真。

    彩硅玉石色彩艳丽，一石多彩，玉化程度高，晶莹剔透，其色彩有淡黄、紫罗兰、紫红、淡红、鲜红、乳白，佳品为鸡血红多彩玉，表皮有李四光环，给人一种珠光宝气，雍容华贵的感觉，有人用它雕刻工艺玩件，抛光程度较高。
  彩卵石变化多端，石形怪异，纹理多变。石形以蛋形为主，有饼形、长圆形、舌形等，产量较大，以有白色釉面线条为上品，一般线条以黑色为多，形成轮、弧、圆或各种图案，也有坑，洞者为上品。
    蜡石颜色多样，有金黄、土黄、棕黄、淡黄等，还有少量白蜡石。佳品为黄蜡上部含有红色、金红色或鸡血红。蜡石形状丰盈，一般在40至50公斤左右，大的可达上百公斤，质地坚硬，有釉面表皮，大部分都有天然浅浮雕样的指甲纹、金钱纹、刀刻纹等，一般有较好的透明度。
    水波纹石主要是指在石头上面有对比度强的水波浪状条纹，质地和金纹石类似，但也有彩玉质地的。上品水波纹石条文整齐、波浪生动，含有少量红色水波条纹，是本地较为名贵罕见的石种。梅花石表皮有各种红色梅花状画面，上品为带花的梅花石。

   目前沅江石正处在资源开发阶段，其中彩硅玉石、水波纹石、梅花石又称为沅江三金，是沅江奇石中的珍品，众多爱石者梦寐以求，能获一石足矣。
